PODCAST: Strong Songs by Kirk Hamilton
It’s fun to hear someone do an analysis of a familiar tune you may have never given a second thought to. Kirk Hamilton selects wonderful examples from pop and jazz and essentially asks, “What makes this song work?” He considers melodic construction, motifs, harmonic development and all the sorts of questions we ask when doing a CMP analysis, complete with listening examples, clear explanations, and even speculation on what makes each song not just seductive but enduring. Listening to someone dig deep into a different genre gives the CMP brain great pleasure and no guilt. Perfect summer listening!
A good place to start is the February 6, 2019 edition of ABBA’s Dancing Queen. Be sure to listen towards the end to hear Hamilton’s thought-provoking and memorable thoughts on the song’s peak affective moment.
