From the President
by Lynn Seidl, WMEA President
The 2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference theme is “Well-Rounded with Music.” The theme was chosen to highlight the fact that music was written into the ESSA document as one of the academic subjects comprising a well-rounded education. We, as music educators, have known this all along, and we are jubilant that ESSA announces this to the nation. Our WMEA state music conference session offerings and performances have continued to elevate, educate and enlighten. Wisconsin has much to be proud of, while still working hard at the aspects of education that need shoring up.
Over one hundred conference sessions are being offered, along with concerts from a wide variety of performing groups. We will open on Wednesday evening with a concert at 7 p.m. in the Monona Terrace Ballroom by the Navy Band Great Lakes Wind Ensemble. Please join us, for the third year of the opening President’s Welcome from 8-8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, in Monona Terrace Lecture Hall. There are no sessions scheduled during this time and the exhibit hall is not open yet, so come to see the WMEA awards being presented and listen to a keynote address by our very own Wisconsin music educator, Chris Gleason. Chris is our Wisconsin Teacher of the Year and one of four national finalists for National Teacher of the Year. In addition, one lucky attendee will be selected from a random drawing to receive a free 2018 conference registration. You must be present to win.
Our WSMA State Honors Music Project ensembles will perform on Thursday evening, Friday midday and Saturday afternoon, showcasing our outstanding students from middle and high school levels. For the fifth year, we are hosting an “Aspiring Music Majors” program for high school juniors and seniors on Friday. This event is being sponsored by Conn-Selmer & Wisconsin Music Stores.
Early discounted registration ends on September 17, and again includes a Friday-only option. A letter to school administrators from WSMA President Jon Gilliland detailing the conference professional development opportunities has been sent to all Wisconsin administrators, and can be downloaded (pdf) to support your attendance at conference. If needed, please update your membership status to take advantage of reduced rates for WMEA/NAfME members. You can renew online at nafme.org. Conference details can be found at wmeamusic.org/conference.
Please join me on October 25-28 in Madison for the 2017 Wisconsin State Music Conference. We can celebrate Well-Rounded With Music together. I hope to see you there!
